iA Writer Help

Using versions of a document

iA Writer for Mac automatically saves versions of your document every hour as you write, and more frequently when you’re making many changes. You can also save a version at any time. You can then browse through document versions, and go back to an older version.

Open iA Writer

To browse versions:
  • In iA Writer, choose File Revert To Browse All Versions….
  • Move the pointer to the right of the document’s name in the Title bar, click the down arrow that appears, then choose Browse All Versions.
To interact with versions:
  • Use the tick marks in the timeline to browse versions.
  • To Restore a version, select it then click Restore.
  • To Duplicate a version, select it, hold down the Option key, then click Restore a Copy.
  • To Copy text from a version, select text and use Edit Copy or Command-C.
  • To Delete a version, select it, move the pointer to the right of the document’s title, click the down arrow, then choose Delete This Version.
  • To Delete all versions, click the down arrow to the right of the document’s title, hold down the Option key, then choose Delete Old Versions.

Click Done to leave the versions interface without performing any changes.

To save a version as a new file:

Select the version then choose File Save.

Alternatively, hold down Option and choose File Save As… to rename the new file.

To revert a document to the last saved or last opened version:
Move the pointer to the right of the document’s name in the Title bar, click the down arrow that appears, then choose Last Saved, Previous Save, or Last Opened.

iA Writer saves your document as a plain text file using the extension .md (in UTF-8 encoding).
